For the first time, the team will travel west to east across Greenland\u2019s inland ice sheet (Inlandsis). Along the way, two scientific research projects will be carried out, while the expedition also serves as a call to action regarding the growing environmental and military threats facing the Arctic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led once again by Ram\u00f3n Larramendi, the expedition features a team of six explorers\u2014its largest yet. Larramendi returns to the Windsled with his usual drive after the pandemic pause:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of uncertainty around crossing Greenland from west to east, as it\u2019s never been done before with this kind of vehicle. But we\u2019re confident we\u2019ll overcome the challenges and achieve all our goals.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expedition is organized by the Polar Exploration Association and funded by the technology company GMV, Auxiliar Conservera, Tierras Polares, the Department of Environment of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, and the regional environment ministries of Valencia and Murcia, along with the Environmental Office of the San Sebasti\u00e1n City Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Polar Science, Global Science<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientific team includes Spanish researchers Luc\u00eda Hortal, who holds a master\u2019s in organic chemistry from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and Bego\u00f1a Hern\u00e1ndez, an environmental science graduate. They\u2019ll lead projects from Madrid\u2019s Astrobiology Center, focusing on biochemical analysis of snow at various depths, and from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MicroAirPolar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, which collects airborne microorganisms and pathogens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the team includes Basque journalist Juanma Sotillos, Valencian mountaineer Carlos Pitarch, and polar explorer Markus Tobia Leisegang from Venezuela.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>New Challenges<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larramendi estimates the expedition will take about 35 days as they circumnavigate the South Dome, the highest elevation in southern Greenland\u2019s ice sheet, at nearly 3,000 meters above sea level. Over 20 years after inventing the Windsled\u2014and with 40,000 km already traveled across Antarctica and Greenland\u2014this mission will test a giant 250-square-meter kite. In steady, light wind, each square meter of sail can pull about 9 kilos. With its crew, scientific gear, and supplies, the Windsled will weigh approximately 2,200 kg, 500 of which is the sled itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Windsled is made up of four modules\u2014pilot, cargo, science, and living quarters\u2014measuring 13 meters long by 3.5 meters wide. Its modular design allows it to split in two if needed based on the terrain. Nearly all its equipment was developed by Spanish companies: Altus (tents and clothing), Windtech (kites), and Fun Run in Aranda de Duero (sled construction).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Clean Energy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In line with the United Nations\u2019 sustainability goals, the expedition is a model of \u201czero footprint.\u201d Amazingly, the team will only use 70 liters of fuel on the entire journey\u2014just enough to melt snow for drinking water. All other energy needs will be met with wind and solar power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>More Than Just Science<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond its role as a mobile eco-lab, the expedition aims to spotlight the urgent need to protect the Arctic, now widely seen as ground zero for climate change. The region faces serious threats: the melting of Greenland\u2019s ice sheet and the disappearance of sea ice\u2014both critical to global ecological balance\u2014and its rising geopolitical importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a potential trade corridor (the so-called \u201cPolar Silk Road\u201d) and home to 25% of the planet\u2019s untapped mineral resources, the Arctic is now a geopolitical hotspot. Durante la traves\u00eda se desarrollar\u00e1n dos proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n y, al mismo tiempo, la aventura servir\u00e1 de llamada de atenci\u00f3n sobre las crecientes amenazas ambientales y militares a las que est\u00e1 siendo sometido el \u00c1rtico.\n\nUn equipo de seis expedicionarios, m\u00e1s numeroso que nunca hasta la fecha, ser\u00e1 liderado de nuevo por Ram\u00f3n Larramendi, que vuelve al trineo del viento con el \u00e1nimo de siempre tras el par\u00f3n de la pandemia: <em>\u201cTenemos una gran incertidumbre sobre las dificultades de la traves\u00eda de Groenlandia en sentido oeste-este, no realizada con anterioridad, pero estamos seguros de que las vamos a superar y cumpliremos todos nuestros objetivos\u201d.<\/em>\n\nLa expedici\u00f3n ha sido impulsada por la Asociaci\u00f3n Exploraci\u00f3n Polar y est\u00e1 financiada por la tecnol\u00f3gica GMV, Auxiliar Conservera, Tierras Polares, el departamento de Medio Ambiente de la Diputaci\u00f3n de Guipuzkoa y las consejer\u00edas de Medio Ambiente de la Comunidad de Valencia y de Murcia, adem\u00e1s de la Concejal\u00eda de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de San Sebasti\u00e1n.\n<h3>Ciencia polar, ciencia mundial<\/h3>\nEn cuanto al equipo cient\u00edfico de este \u201cSOS ARCTIC TRINEO DE VIENTO 2022\u201d, las espa\u00f1olas Luc\u00eda Hortal, m\u00e1ster en qu\u00edmica org\u00e1nica por la Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid, y Bego\u00f1a Hern\u00e1ndez, licenciada en Medio Ambiente, liderar\u00e1n los proyectos del Centro de Astrobiolog\u00eda de Madrid, con an\u00e1lisis bioqu\u00edmico de la nieve a varios metros de profundidad, y el MicroAirPolar de la Universidad Aut\u00f3noma, de captaci\u00f3n de microorganismos y pat\u00f3genos en el aire.\n\nEl periodista vasco Juanma Sotillos, el alpinista valenciano Carlos Pitarch y el alpinista y expedicionario polar Markus Tobia Leisegang, de Venezuela, completan el equipo.\n<h3>Nuevos retos<\/h3>\nEn total, Larramendi estima que invertir\u00e1n unos 35 d\u00edas de traves\u00eda polar, en los que circunvalaran el South Dome, la mayor elevaci\u00f3n de la parte sur del casquete polar de Groenlandia, situado a casi 3000 metros de altitud. M\u00e1s de 20 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la invenci\u00f3n del trineo del viento -y 40.000 kil\u00f3metros recorridos por la Ant\u00e1rtida y Groenlandia-, esta vez la expedici\u00f3n probar\u00e1 una cometa extraordinariamente grande, una nasa de 250 metros cuadrados, de manera que en condiciones de viento suave y estable cada metro cuadrado de \u201cvela\u201d estar\u00e1 arrastrando unos 9 kilos de peso. El trineo del viento con sus ocupantes, equipo cient\u00edfico y pertrechos alcanzar\u00e1 los 2.200 kilos de peso, de los que 500 corresponden al veh\u00edculo. El Trineo de Viento consta de cuatro m\u00f3dulos (pilotaje, carga, ciencia y habitabilidad) con una longitud total de 13 metros por 3,5 m de ancho. Dada su versatilidad, podr\u00e1 separarse en dos partes si las condiciones as\u00ed lo precisan. Casi todo el equipamiento del Trineo de Viento ha sido desarrollado por las marcas espa\u00f1olas Altus (Tiendas y Ropa) Windtech (Cometas) y Fun Run en Aranda de Duero (Trineo).\n<h3>Energ\u00eda limpia<\/h3>\nLa expedici\u00f3n, alineada estrat\u00e9gicamente con los objetivos de sostenibilidad de Naciones Unidas, es el paradigma de la \u201chuella cero\u201d. Todo el resto de energ\u00eda utilizada ser\u00e1 e\u00f3lica y solar fotovoltaica.\n<h3>No solo ciencia<\/h3>\nPero, adem\u00e1s del uso del trineo del viento como eco-laboratorio, la expedici\u00f3n busca tambi\u00e9n llamar la atenci\u00f3n sobre la importancia de la protecci\u00f3n del \u00c1rtico como verdadera zona cero del cambio clim\u00e1tico. Son numerosas las amenazas a las que est\u00e1 siendo sometido, tanto por el derretimiento de la capa de hielo de Groenlandia y la desaparici\u00f3n de la banquisa, claves para el equilibrio ecol\u00f3gico global, como por su creciente importancia geo-estrat\u00e9gica: el \u00c1rtico, como ruta de tr\u00e1fico mar\u00edtimo en la llamada \u201cruta de la seda polar\u201d, y por su valor como reserva del 25% de los recursos mineros del planeta sin explotar, es objeto de tensiones.
